DAVISVILLE TENNIS CLUB’S WOLD TEAM TENNIS RULES

World Team Tennis is a fun and exciting tournament at Davisville that has been running since 2004. The idea is to get everyone out and playing more tennis before the end of year. All teams should have someone (or appoint someone) captain. Don’t worry, the captain doesn’t have that much to do, we just need someone to help us administer the rules fairly and to report scores. If you agree to be captain, then you can appoint someone to do this for you!

Date: Saturday 15 May 2010 (rain out date is Sunday 16 May 2010)

Time: 9:30am – 5:00pm *Showing up on time will help us keep to the schedule.

Type of Tennis: Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles

Format
There will be 4 sets played within each match (one men's doubles, one women's doubles, and two mixed doubles matches). Each set will consist of 5 games.

Every game won counts as a point for your team. The most points at the end of the third round of matches will determine who is going to move ahead.

All teams will play two matches against two other teams in your division. The top team(s) in each division will enter the playoff round. The bottom team(s) in each division is eliminated…sorry!

Teams are traditionally two men and two women (but exceptions can be made).

Rules
World Team Tennis has some different rules that you will need to know. Please read this section carefully as it is vital to know and understand these rules.

 Rules of Play

  • There is a maximum 2 minutes of warm up time. Please be ready to go when you hit the court
  • The total number of games in any set will be 5
  • Choice of serve is decided by racquet spin. Winner chooses serve or side. There is no change over on odd points and so side might be as important as serve in a 5 game set
  • Sets can be played in any order depending on the availability of players. In the event of two teams wanting a different order, the order shown on the score sheet will take precedence.
  • All players on a team have to play twice during each match. Teams able to field appropriate teams to fit the set requirements (women’s doubles, men’s doubles, etc) must do so.
  • Players put into mixed one and mixed two slots before the start of a match must play in mixed one or mixed two slots as indicated (no switching – except by mutual consent)
  • We will try to finish all matches on time. If a match does not complete all 5 games then the teams will be asked to end a match before they are finished with both teams losing the chance to gain valuable points.
  • Teams tying at the end of a match with another team will have the players on court play another game to determine the winner of the match. Players stay on serve. This point (TB Point) will only count in tie break situations after round robin play
  • If a team is stalling, they will be penalized accordingly (warning and then game)
  • Scores must be recorded and reported at the end of the match.
 Discrepancy in Levels
  • Before play in a set starts, players in the match will determine if there is a level discrepancy between players greater than 1 full rating point. A game will be rewarded to any team that has cumulative disadvantages of 1 full rating point or more.
    1. Bill (4.0) and Bob (4.0) are playing Dave (4.5) and Daryll (5.0). Bill and Bob (total 8.0) would start the set with Dave and Daryll (total 9.5) up 1-0.
    2. Susan (5.0) and Sarah (4.5) are playing Tina (4.5) and Tammy (4.5). Susan and Sarah (9.5) would start the set with Tina and Tammy (total 9) with no advantage
    3. Fred (4.0) and Tanya (4.0) are playing Kirk (5.5) and Kathy (5.0) in mixed doubles. Fred and Tanya (total 8.0) would start the set with Kirk and Kathy (total 10.5) up 1-0
  • Some teams may be short women and may have to play men in traditional women’s spots. Every time a man plays in a women’s spot, the team with the men needs to add 0.5 to their cumulative ranking for each man in a women’s position.
    1. Nick (4.) and Nathan (4.0) are playing Mary (4.0) and Melissa (4.5). Nick and Nathan (total 8.0 + 0.5 + 0.5 = 9.0) would start the set with Mary and Melissa (8.5) with no advantage
    2. Carolyn (4.5) and Cindy (4.0) are playing Patrick (4.0) and Pedro (4.5). Carolyn and Cindy (total 8.5) would start the set with Patrick and Petro (total 8.5 + 0.5 + 0.5 = 9.5) up 1-0
    3. Jason (5.0) and Jill (4.0) are playing Ernie (4.5) and Eugene (5.0) in a mixed match. Jason and Jill (total 9.0) would start the set with Ernie and Eugene (total 9.5 + 0.5 = 10.0) up 1-0
  • Players who are playing in the A/B division must be rated 4.0 or above. If a lower level player decides to play in the A/B division, that player will be rated for the day of World Team Tennis as a 4.0 player.
  • Players who are playing in the C division must be rated 3.5 and below. Players rated 4.0 or above cannot play in the C division.
 Coaching
  • Coaching between points by team members is allowed.
  • Team mates are allowed to remain on court when they are not playing, but they have to stay at the net of their team’s side, and they must not cause a visual or verbal distraction during play.
  • Coaching cannot interfere with the natural progression and speed of the game or with the other matches being played.
  • Any team that is uncomfortable with other players on their team being on the court can ask them to leave and these teammates must do so.
  • Players who decide to remain on court are responsible for their own safety and must remain on court for the entire set.
 Deuce
  • Sudden death at deuce (meaning one point decides the game).
  • In mixed sets, players will serve to the opponent of the same sex. In men’s or women’s doubles, it is the receiving team’s choice.
 No Lets on Serves
  • There are no lets on serves.
  • If you serve the ball and it hits the net chord and goes in, then the point proceeds.
  • If you hit the net chord and the ball goes out, then a fault is called.
 Championship Rounds
  • The top team(s) in a division will advance to the championship round. In the case of a tie with total points, head to head records will be used to decide ties. If teams are still tied, then the TB Point with that other team will be used to determine a winner.
 The Champions
  • The winner of the A/B Division and the winner of the C Division will be competing for the coveted WTT Championship trophies.
